Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP or FC/IP), is an Internet Protocol (IP)-based storage networking technology. FCIP mechanisms enable the transmission of Fibre Channel (FC) information by tunneling data over IP between Fibre Channel-enabled storage devices over IP networks. Using FCIP, remotely located storage devices and Storage Area Networks (SANs), can appear to be local. ET's investigation will focus on using FCIP on Penn State's Data Backbone to connect geographically dispersed storage devices. The behavior of these transactions with various network loads, the ability to keep databases synchronized over a distance, and the ability to do near real-time backups, also will be examined. ET results will be compared with results from similar studies of iSCSI.
